What is Green Building?

Green Building is a design and construction process that provides for economic responsibility and the well-being of building occupants, the community, and the environment. Green Building offers positive social benefits by establishing a commitment to the future and the way we live for years to come.

What is LEED?

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) created LEED as a rating system for the performance of green buildings. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was created by the United States Green Building Council (USBC) as a national standard used to determine a green building’s overall environmental performance. The system can be used as a tool to identify green design, construction and operational strategies, and to measure and monitor progress, and document success.

LEED is specific to types of construction projects and includes the following categories:

  • New Construction & Major Renovations (LEED-NC)
  • Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI)
  • Schools
  • Healthcare

LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five credit categories related to environmental impact: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. In each of the preceding categories, a building may earn points toward a specific overall LEED rating. For new construction projects (NC), there are 69 points available.

Are Products LEED Rated?
No. Individual products and materials may contribute LEED points to an overall building project; however, products themselves are not LEED rated. It is important to understand each product’s performance characteristics that contribute to the LEED rating system.
Important Considerations with Eco-Friendly Signage?
  • Total cost of materials, refining, transportation and replacement over the life of the system
  • Energy Consumption: Utilizing low power lighting such as LED.
  • Longevity: Are the products durable or composed of removable components that reduce excessive replacement.
  • Materials and Manufacturing Processes: Consideration for the well-being of workers involved in the manufacturing process and the costs and environmental impact of transforming raw materials into a finished good.
  • Design Strategies: Investigation of opportunities to enhance the overall effectiveness of the communications with the precise number and placement of signage. In addition, an overall holistic approach to using materials and technologies that express the building’s overall environmental strategy.
  • Indoor Air Quality: Gases and particulate emissions that may compromise the health of inhabitants.
